San Jose Football Player Killed in E-Scooter Crash | Personal Injury

On the morning of October 21, 2022, an e-scooter and public bus collision took the life of Camdan McWright, 18-year-old freshman on the San Jose State football team.

The incident occurred at 6:51 a.m. at the intersection of Reed and South 10th Street in San Jose, California. Mr. McWright was proceeding southbound on 10th Street when he was struck by a San Jose Unified School District bus, which was traveling east on Reed Street. Mr. McWright was pronounced dead at the scene.

McWright was a three star recruit who had played at St. Genevieve High School in Pacoima, California. He played running back. He was a communications major with aspirations of becoming a broadcast sports analyst.

It is unknown whether there were any defects with the e-scooter Mr. McWright was riding.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, injuries involving e-scooters have increased 70% from 2017 through 2020. During that timespan there were 190,000 documented emergency room visits related to e-scooters and other micromobility products.

In California e-scooters have the right to occupy the roadway on roads with a speed limit of 25 mph or less. Otherwise, they must remain in the bicycle lane. If you are riding an e-scooter, please remember to wear a helmet and protective clothing. Be watchful for imperfections in the roadway surface such as potholes, cracks, loose gravel and dirt, and obey all traffic laws. It is important to use common sense when riding in traffic, do not assume other drivers see you.
