Chipotle, the so-called fast casual chain, recently reached a settlement with a food poisoning victim. The nationwide outbreak of foodborne illness affected hundreds of people and put many people in California off the idea of eating at the popular restaurant. However, the recent personal injury settlement included something that might surprise most — coupons for free burritos from Chipotle.
Over 500 patrons of the restaurant were seriously sickened after eating food tainted with E. Coli. Many of those victims moved on to file suit against the restaurant chain, including a 19-year-old woman who had to be hospitalized afterward. In total, she was left with approximately $40,000 worth of medical bills related to her hospital stay.
After filing suit against Chipotle in an effort to achieve compensation for her medical bills and other related damages, she made the otherwise unusual request for burritos. Although the financial aspect of the settlement is not entirely clear, Chipotle gave the woman coupons that she can use to get free burritos from its various locations. Many of the other victims who were seriously sickened by the E. Coli outbreak also reported that they had already returned to the restaurant and had eaten there without issue.
Chipotle has apparently addressed and fixed any lingering E. Coli issues, but that alone does not address the hundreds of customers who were sickened. Instead, victims exercised the same right that California victims of other injuries can. Personal injury claims are often effective at achieving compensation for victims’ physical, financial and emotional damages. While it might seem unimaginable for someone who has suffered a personal injury to return to the restaurant where it occurred, all victims handle their injuries and move forward in their own ways.
