Mirena IUD

Have you used the Mirena IUD? Have you experienced complications? You may be at risk of device migration, uterine perforations or other serious injuries.

What Is Mirena?

The Mirena IUD was approved as a contraceptive in 2000 and expanded in 2009 to treat heavy menstrual bleeding for women wanting to use an IUD for birth control. It is approved for intrauterine contraception for women who have had at least one child with no history of pelvic inflammatory disease or ectopic pregnancy.

The Mirena IUD is a small, t-shaped, plastic device inserted into the uterus by a health care provider. It works to prevent pregnancy by releasing a low dose of levonorgestrel, a synthetic progestin hormone, directly into the uterus. The Mirena IUD can remain in place for up to five years.

Serious Side Effects

Young women who use the Mirena IUD are at risk of the following:

  • Perforation into the uterine or cervix wall that may not be detected immediately following the implantation/insertion or during a follow-up appointment four to six weeks after
  • The device embedding in vaginal tissue, requiring surgical removal
  • Migration into the pelvic area, resulting in adhesions, scarring or intestinal perforation
  • Sepsis infection
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Ectopic pregnancy (occurring outside the uterus)

Attorneys Holding Negligent Drug Manufacturers Accountable

In 2009, the FDA found that a 2009 Mirena promotion by Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals overstated the effectiveness and minimized the risks of the device. Pending lawsuits seek compensation from Bayer. Young women suffering the serious side effects of Mirena may be entitled to file their own Mirena IUD lawsuit for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
