Robert E. Cartwright, Sr.

Robert E. Cartwright was one of the leading and most highly respected lawyers in California and the United States. Born on July 9, 1925 in Fresno, California, he graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1949 with Phi Beta Kappa honors, and then from Boalt Hall Law School with Order of the Coif honors in 1951. He was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity. He built the law firm of Cartwright, Slobodin, Bokelman, Borowsky, Wartnick, Moore & Harris, Inc., specializing in plaintiff's personal injury and commercial litigation, from a small firm to one of the most distinguished trial firms in the country.

His life was dedicated to advancing the public interest and the cause of social justice. For that reason, he played a central role in establishing and advancing the work of Trial Lawyers for Public Justice. He was a founder of Trial Lawyers for Public Justice and served as its President. He was pursuing TLPF litigation on a pro bono basis at the time of his death.

He was Past President of the San Francisco Lawyers Club, and Past President of the Northern California Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates. He had Advocate status on said Board which required a minimum of fifty jury trials completed to verdict. He had served in all the chairs in the Northern California Chapter of the American Trial Lawyers Association, and was a Past President thereof. He was Past President of the California Trial Lawyers Association, former member of the Board of Governors of the American Trial Lawyers Association, Past President of the Western Trial Lawyers Association and was a member of the Executive Committee of the State Bar of California.

He was a lecturer in the California Continuing Education of the Bar program, speaking on trial topics through the state. He was the First Chairman of the California Trial Lawyers Tort Seminar and had participated in many other speaking and seminar programs throughout the state, and in various other states such as Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Arizona, Utah and Montana. Mr. Cartwright was also an active member on many other San Francisco Bar Association, Civic, Fraternal and Philanthropic Committees and was a member of many such organizations.

He was also a Fellow of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, and was also the narrator and editor of "Cal Case-ettes", published Bancroft-Whitney, on which he summarized on tape every California Civil case and selected criminal cases, and is co-author of "California Products Liability Action", published by Matthew Bender.
